The chiton, an ancient sea creature that predates dinosaurs, has long fascinated scientists with its remarkable adaptability. A recent study from Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (Kufos) and Nirmalagiri College has delved into the genetic secrets of these creatures, revealing fascinating insights into their evolutionary journey. The research, led by Liju Thomas, Sandra Saseendran, Ranjeet K, and Siby Philip, has been published in The Journal of Basic and Applied Zoology.
What makes this study particularly intriguing is the discovery that chitons, despite their seemingly unchanged exterior, have undergone significant genetic changes over millions of years. The researchers decoded the complete genetic information of two chiton species found along the Keralam coast, one from Chombala in Kozhikode and the other from Varkala. This finding is groundbreaking as it provides the first genetic insights into the evolution of chitons from India's shores.
The study highlights that natural selection has shaped some of the genes responsible for energy production in chiton cells. This adaptation allows chitons to survive in changing environments, including fluctuations in oxygen levels and other environmental stresses. As Ranjeet K, a professor at Kufos, explains, "A species may look almost unchanged on the exterior while continuing to evolve inside. These genetic changes may help chitons survive the constantly changing conditions of the seashore."
Furthermore, the research team compared the genetic information of 44 chiton species, providing a comprehensive understanding of their evolutionary relationships. This comparative analysis offers a unique perspective on the diversity and interconnectedness of chiton species worldwide. The earliest fossil evidence of chitons dates back to the late Cambrian period, approximately 500 million years ago, further emphasizing their ancient origins.
